Larry Prusak: The Future of Knowledge

The Future of Knowledge
1. The loss of the monopoly of ?useful? scientific and technical knowledge and know-how that has been held by the US, W.Europe and Japan since the late 19 century. The implications for this event are staggering and we are just beginning to see the results of these changes in the current phase of globalization.
2. The extraordinary plummeting of information transaction costs which has radically changed how organizations work.-especially in the use of virtual models, distributed cognition, and focus on projects . These developments have also brought about a great shift in how we subsequently work with and value knowledge, as distinct from information,
3. The various experiments and attempts currently underway to better manage knowledge since its value has so increased. This includes:
- How to structure organizations away from the 19th Century command and control model to new forms that allow greater focus on knowledge exploration and exploitation.
- New roles and processes focused on knowledge development, retention, and transfer.
- New methods of assessing and measuring knowledge value.
4. The growing democratization of knowledge within organizations and society. This has come about with the rapid growth of personal technologies and new ways of understanding personal knowledge. However the seeming erosion of traditional cognitive authority is very much a two edged sword-with ?everyone knowing everything? many issues arise as to how decisions will be made, who will make them, and on what basis will they be made.
5. New ways of understanding knowledge itself. It is established that organizations spend up to 60% of their non-capital expenditures on intangibles, with forms of knowledge being a large part of these expenses. How are these expenses evaluated and measured? What tools and methods exist that can better let organizations ?know what they know?? How does human and social capital research allow us to move forward in this understanding.
